The incidence of symptomatic herniated lumbar discs is estimated to be between 1-2% [1] and over 480,000 lumbar discectomies are performed annually in the United States [2, 3]. Lumbar discectomies are effective in relieving back and leg pain [4] and patient outcomes and satisfaction after discectomy have been reported in 7580% of patients receiving surgery [5-7]. However, a common complication after lumbar discectomy is recurrence of herniated disc which has been reported to occur in the range of 3-18% [8, 9]. Recurrent lumbar disc herniation is usually treated with open technique with wider exposure for discectomy, or in cases of significant instability and/or loss of disc height, lumbar interbody fusion [10]. This complication results in increased patient hospitalization and cost as well as missed work days. All of these contribute to an increased economic burden on the United States health care system [8, 9]. It has been estimated that reoperation for recurrent herniated discs in the lumbar spine resulted in a normalized cost of $298,797 per 100 primary discectomies in the setting of a recurrence rate of 12% [11].

Prevalence of concomitant sacroiliac joint dysfunction in patients with image proven herniated lumbar discs
Abstract Background: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction is a widely known but poorly defined cause of low back pain. To our knowledge, few published studies have been conducted to evaluate systematically the prevalence and significance of concomitant sacroiliac joint dysfunction in patients with herniated lumbar discs. As concomitant SIJ dysfunction in low back pain patients is like...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Morphology of Lumbar Disc Herniation and MRI Changes in Adjacent Vertebral Bodies
Background: Intervertebral disc herniation has two common types, extrusion and protrusion, which may affect the adjacent vertebrae. In addition, it is associated with significant signal changes in T1 MRI (short TR/TE) and T2 MRI (long TR/TE). Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional analytic one, in which sampling was performed retrospectively. Cases were randomly selected from the pa...

Introduction and Aim: Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common causes of low back pain. Sciatic pain in association with lumbar disc herniation may require surgical intervention in the form of lumbar discectomy.Chronic illnesses such as the low back pain has important consequences like an alteration in the health quality of the person. Health quality is a multi-faceted concept and goes ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF ANTERIOR DISCECTOMY AND INTERPOSITION AL IMPLANT UPON LUMBAR MOTION SEGMENT STABILITY
The cadaver spine motion segment behavior under torsional load was evaluated with the disc intact, with partial anterior discectomy and with spacer insertion. The results of this study explain how anterior lumbar discectomy and interbody fusion (ALIF) affects the torsional stability of the motion segment. The pseudarthrosis rate of the anterior lumbar discectomy and interbody fusion (ALIF)...
متن کاملLevel-diagnosis of Lumbar Disc Herniation
Little information is at hand on the diagnostic values of the clinical symptoms and signs in the level diagnosis of patients with lower lumbar disc herniation. We examined one hundred and thirty nine consecutive candidates for lower lumbar discectomy. Monoradicular pain with signs attributed to the fifth lumbar and first sacral root dysfunctions were evaluated independently in each patient. ...
